Synopsis from goodread - In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV.
Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before—and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that will weigh survival against humanity and life against love
Obviously I knew Katniss was going to go into the Hunger Games, but I did not expect Prim to be called and when Katniss volunteered for her sister - basically to die - she forever endeared herself to me. She's a very selfless character. Though for someone who had been taking care of her family and been around Gale, I found her very naive to those around her (not the tributes - but Effie, Haymitch, Ceasar, the head people)
The Game itself - eesh is that intense - like when Thresh bashes Cloves head in with a rock or Rue getting a spear through the chest, or Cato being eaten and maimed. - again. HOLY INTENSE.
Peeta - oh sweet Peeta. I did think when he announced he loved Katniss that it was a plot, but when he saved her? and teased her? and can we talk about how heartbroken he was the last two pages of the book. I am so pissed at Katniss. Really? She better get her act together.
Some quick thoughts
The berry suicide pact- clever
I wonder what Prim is going to do
I wonder if there will be a triangle between Gale, Peeta, and Katniss
I like the world and am hoping to learn about all the districts, individually
Did she get a boob job?
Did you know they want to start banning this book in school because of the mention of suicide?
I think this is one of the best books I've read recently.
ReplyDeleteI would agree!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love this book so much :) They want to start banning this? That's beyond ridiculous :( I hope you like the rest of the series!
ReplyDeleteMy copy gave away that it was Prim's name pulled originally on the back cover. Too much advance information!
ReplyDeleteKatniss gets a boob job? WHAT?! I missed that little tidbit.... where does it say tht?
ReplyDelete@Audrey - Yeah they want to ban it because they think it enforces that suicide is an option - its just a witch hunt.
ReplyDelete@Sam I wonder if mine tells me that... I didnt bother reading the cover because sooo many people liked it
@TLG I am not sure if she did, her buddy Cinna says something at the end, like it was a compromise... so I could totally be wrong...its why I asked.
Oh so glad you enjoyed the book. :) And yes I wasn't sure how the games came about for Katniss till I read the book. But I was shocked.
ReplyDeleteAnd I have to say I didn't want to read this one as I was against the idea of kids having to kill kids, and it being writen for kids! That was a thing that took some getting over for me. But a fellow book lover online talked me into reading the book and I was truly blown away. I'm glad to see that the book didn't deal with Katniss or Peeta having to kill others per say. I really liked that about the book. You knew it was going on, but it was avoided too. That was what caught my eye on the read.
I do hope you continue with the series. I think you will enjoy it very much and I'm really curious to see what you think. :)
Ms. Collins' imagination is simply amazing. The complexities of Panam and its various inhabitants are so well written as to draw the reader into the story so completely that it's hard to put the book down.
ReplyDeleteBrava Ms Collins! Well done indeed!
